Post-refrig/freezer malfunction, how long must we wait to move components back?

Anyone care to share....

Let's say a fuse blew on the blood storage refrigerator, and all the inventory was relocated temporarily to the secondary storage device. The fuse is replaced, temp back in range, alarm tested; how long does one need to wait before moving the inventory back ?

I didn't see a guideline in the Tech Manual.

Thanks!

I'll be perfectly honest, I don't know the answer to this. I would have thought, however, once your fridge/freezer is back working again, and once it has been temperature mapped again, you are good to go.

There's another thread along these lines on here somewhere I think. Basically you need to be convinced the blood is safe and have enough documentation to show someone why you think so (safety, purity and potency factor). And you need to either be convinced the problem won't happen again right away or willing to move the whole inventory again if it does (risk and hassle factor).

Hi Megan,

We require it to demonstrate stability for 24 hours and then we move the inventory back. That is not based on any regulation - just my personal preference given the afore mentioned risk/hassle factor. We also take the opportunity to re-cal all the probes/thermometers to NIST. (And redo all alarm tests, as you said.)

We give it 24 hours of continuous monitoring prior to moving product back.

We normally wait for 24hr of continuous monitoring before using it again. Rarely, we use 4hr time-frame.

We also do 24 hours. Once you know you've reached a steady state temp for 24 hours you will sleep better at night!

I agree with Magnum, taking the temps every 4 hours shows that you have documentation of stability for at least 24 hours.

We had an AABB assessment last summer and the assessor approved of the fact that we had waited 24 hours once the temperature stabilized before moving the blood back. I also performed an alarm check.
