What is the difference between directed and designated donation ? Please if u have reference code it.

Semantics.

Directed Donations are donations made "directly" for that patient

Designated Donations are products that are specifically put aside for a patient. Best example I can think of is HLA matched platelets which are designated, but may not be directed (with patient's knowledge and approval).

We use the 2 terms interchangeably. Our blood supplier used to call them “Directed Donation”, “Donor Directed” or “Donor Specific”. These terms are used for blood donated by a friend or family member of the intended recipient and tagged for that recipient.

A few years ago our supplier decided that the term was not accurate in that it sounded like the Donor was directing the unit to the recipient. Since the supplier required an order from the recipient physician and the recipient must supply a list of acceptable donors to the blood supplier, they now call it a “Designated” donation, i.e. the recipient is the one who designates, vs. the donor directing where it goes.

The terms mean the same thing.

DESIGNATED: A unit collected from a donor called by the collecting facility to privide (a) product(s) to be used by a specific recipient in some future therapeutic procedure (for example, HLA-compatible).

DIRECTED: A unit collected from a donor who presents to the collecting facility at the request of another person intending to provide (a) product(s) to be used by that person in some future therapeutic procedure.
