As of June 2011, there have been 5230 individuals certified as SBB's since the exam was first offered in 1954. Don't know how many are still around or active though and where they are located.

What do mean "challenge the SBB certification"?

Hi L106,

I mean take the SBB exam to be certified. Can a non US citizen or non US resident take the SBB exam to be certified if they met all the qualifications?

One can challenge the SBB exam by not going to a formal SBB training program. You have to meet the criteria set by AABB/ASCP Registry. The exam is formulated so that the majority of those who pass are those who attend the formal programs. I believe it is the specialty exam with the least number of passing individuals.

Not sure if this helps but here is a link to ASCP International Procedure Booklet for certification.

The ASCP publishes an annual report with examination and certification statistics. http://www.ascp.org/Board-of-Certification/Procedures-and-Reports#tabs-3.

I'm not sure when the 2011 report will be published, though.

It's still only 60% and that's if you go through an accredited program. If you do not then the stat drops to 35%.

I was surprised the number of SBBs was so low! I am proud to say we have 6 in our department alone with several talented techs studying for it currently! It is a tough test but felt good to pass it. We have a terrific Medical Director who offers tutorials and test prep for anyone interested.
