if a donor has a hb of 12.5 but his Hct<38. Do we accept him or not as a donor for regular donation and what about plateletpheresis donation?

Is it important to have the Hct above 38?

Think of it in volumes gained. If 500ml is drawn that would only give you 190 ml or less in a pack so I'd say no. Better to send the patient away to their docs to organise getting their Hb up so they can donate a decent sized pack next time :)

Also why is their hct less than 38? Should that be investigated?

US Regulations would consider a donor eligible with a Hgb of at least 12.5, Hct of at least 38%. You can meet one and not the other (i.e. hgb 12.5, Hct 37.8) .... you DO however need to specify in your procedures WHICH value you will use as your "test of record". You cannot pick and choose the value you want to use in order to qualify the donor. Once you pick one, that is really the only one you need to document and track.
