 Those of you who work at collection/manufacturing facilities that are not part of a transfusion service, how are you complying with the standard to test platelet count and pH at the end of storage or issue?

I am assuming you're talking about platelet concentrate. We only test count on QC batch-2 batches of 10/ month but we pH every single one at issue.

I'm wondering about apheresis platelets. What do you consider issue? We distribute platelets to transfusion services who then issue for patients. As a collection facility is "issue" the distribution to the transfusion service?

We have a transfusion service but I asked this same question of another center and their qc sampling was to test "N" of platlets on day 2, on day 3,4 and 5 as they issued them to transfusion services. This was considered "end of storage" at the blood center. They developed this approach via their FDA CSO

At issue for us means when they are ready to leave our facility. We do pH QC on plateletpheresis monthly but not at issue. It's the hospital's responsibility to pH them.
