Just wondering if anyone knows where to purchase a 250ml bottle of solution with the thermometer already in it? Is everyone making their own? And, what different applications are there for it?

Thanks,

What application in particular calls for such a large volume of solution? I have small 30ml Ertco thermometers in both of my refrigerators. The bottles are ethylene glycol filled and the thermometer is PTFE coated for safety. We have used this style for many years with good results. The catalog number is R-020-1S if that helps.

We get ours from Cardinal Health. It is a "kit" including the thermometer and 250 ml. bottle of ethylene Glycol/Water specifically designed for Blood Bank refrigerators. Catalog number is T8401-6.

Thanks for the info. Do you have in the fridge as a kind of double check in addition to your alarmed thermometers?

That is what the smaller bottled thermometer is used for. The Glycol bottle is the "upper" temperature ans a reading from the smaller bottle is the "lower" temperature (upper and lower determined by the actual position in the refrigerator). They are normally within 0.5 degrees C of each other.

You can make your own thermometer too. Glycerol is cheap ($70 for 500mls) and can be purchased through most Lab supply companies. Make up a 10% glycerol solution in a glass/plastic bottle with a holed stopper for the thermometer or an unused blood bag (but blood bag won't last as long and is hard to keep from leaking). Your thermometer still needs to be NIST certified (in the US).

We use the same as BBK710. I have two of them in each refrigerator, one upper and one lower. We check them against the internal iCenter of our Helmer frig. The are usually within 0.5 of each other.

I bet you can buy a bottle of glycerin at a drug store for a lot less than that which would be good enough for this purpose.
