Would anyone like to share how their institution handles if they transfuse Rh positive platelets to Rh negative recipients?

Do you give Rhig to all or just children and women of child-bearing years?

We have stopped giving RhIg when we have to transfuse Rh positive products. My pathologist was uncomfortable with the volume that has to be given for red cell transfusions and the volume of red cells in the platelet pheresis product is vanishingly small now. We do not use random donor pooled platelets.

We use apheresis platelets and transfuse regardless of Rh type (just because we never have enough and can't get that picky). For women and kids under 18, we try to get Rh neg platelets, and if we can't we "recommend" administration of RhIg.

We have to take what we get as for as both ABO and Rh. We do not give RhIg. Our blood supplier does not provide random donor plts only apheresis products.

We transfuse RH pos plts to Rh negative recipients and do not administer RhIg. We are the same as David Saikin, take what we get. And be glad we got it!

Preferably we transfuse similar ABO and Rh, if the patient is female we advise RhIg till child bearing age. For ABO incompatible remove plasma and add normal saline, if child up to 2 years of age. We have Random only.
