My hospital pays by education and does not require ASCP certification. Now it seems we have quite a few techs with degrees (MLT or MT) and they are not taking the ASCP registry. We do not require a state license. Just wondering how other places work?

Our hospital now pays $300 per year bonus for national certification. Several years ago we were in same situation as cindym, but now our state has licensure and the hospital pays for national certification.

We do not have a state license, but we do pay extra for the national certification. We have a few people who never bother to take the exam.

comment_35035

We require certification for all MT's and MLT's. If we hire a new graduate they must take and pass the exam within 6 months as a condition of their employment.

Thank god we are the same as BBK710 also... It's amazing that the person putting plastic fingernails on people MUST be licensed, though you could possibly receive a blood transfusion crossmatched by someone that is held to NO standard or certification in some instances. Is it me?? or is that a bit weird ??

I am wondering if there is any review center for SBB. I would like to challenge the exam but I would really like to go to a review center first. I live in California. Also I have 7 years experience in blood bank but I noticed that the reqt from ASCP BOR says I must have donor processing experience, how do I get around this? We do elution, absorption, aliquots in our hospital as well and I do not know if processing units when our products come in is enough? Pls help these 2 dilemmas I have. I should be getting my MSCLS in the fall of this year. Thanks for your help.

Jean, for the SBB, do a search for posts, there have been many that gave great info for SBB reviews, classes, books, etc. Also check out AABB's website for info on the requirements.

Our hospital requires national certification be it ASCP, NCA, or AMT. Older tech like me who passed a national certification are not required to continue membership, but are expected to continue continuing education.

Here in Riyadh KSA, some hospital pay extra for US certifications but mine none- I did not get any benefit since 1998, but I am maintaining it (ASCP)CM) which benefits me to keep my knowledge up to date

Hi Mohammad,

So the pay in Saudi Arabia is the same as in US? How much do you get paid there hourly if I can ask?

What are the benefits?

comment_36051

Hi,

You may be able to work out a rotation in a community blood center to see what goes on in a blood donor center. For some certificates, rotating through Donor screening and phlebotomy, product distribution, component manufacturing, viral testing, a reference lab may be adequate. It certainly would not hurt to contact your blood center to see what can be done. We take students in my center from time-to-time.

The AABB at their annual meeting (which is in San Diego in October I think) has an all day SBB review before the meeting begins. I understand it is quite good.:)

George Washington University has a good SBB examination review course online!

Thanks Kip. Is your blood center in California? Our local blood center would not take students. If you are nearby, maybe I can apply to rotate in your blood center.

comment_36071

I regret, I am in Pennsylvania. If you are in northern CA you have more choices for blood centers. Are you in the Bay area?

Also, Missyg has a great point. GW also has a nice review course.

comment_36074

Hi,

I am in southern california but it is easy for me also to travel to northern california.

Is GW George Washington? Do they offer a review class or do I have to buy a review

book? Is Missyg refers to a name of a person or is it a place? I am new in this website

so I do not really know how to work around it.

comment_36076

GW is George Washington and it is a review course that is 12 weeks long. And I am missyg!!! There are also some really good study aides in the library section of the blood bank talk forum.

comment_36081

H Kip,

Thank you for your info. Is this anyway so you give me the direct URL for GW where I can register for the review course. Also, since you are a SBB and have a lot of contacts, do you have friends here in Southern or Northern California in blood centers where maybe I can go for a few weeks to fulfill the reqts for donor processing reqts for the SBB exam? Thanks for your help.

Once you're firm on the requirements, I would suggest that you contact the nearest donor center and talk to their [laboratory] education person to determine if you can audit the required sections. The donor center then provides [to you I believer]the necessary documentation.
