That is my understanding as well. Please help us if there is something we are missing.

We use code E0773 for Thawed Fresh Frozen Plasma and give it an expiration date/time of 24 hours after it's been thawed. Once it's thawed we place it in the refrigerator. If it's not used for the patient it was thawed for, it is still useable for the remainder of that 24 hr period.

Some people have procedures in place for converting the product to a 5 day product after the 24 hours is up. They may use it for tracking purposes. You are not required to relabel the product code of a thawed ffp with a 24 hour outdate.

I know I have seen somewhere that relabeling FFP when thawed (with 24 hour expiration) is not required. However, now that I need that source I cannot seem to locate it. Can anyone tell me where I can find this in black & white? My lab manager was told that JC requires it, and would like to have some documentation to the contrary.

Are you putting a label with E0773 on the bag?

E0773 Thawed FRESH FROZEN PLASMA|CPD/XX/refg

E0773 works only if your original FFP was CPD plasma. If you put this label on plasma that was collected in any other anticoagulant it is mislabeled.
