Just received information indicating George Garratty is to speak at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky on Wednesday April 13th, 2011 from 1-3pm. Topic is:

Do We Really Understand RBC Destruction? Compatibility Testing for Patients with RBC Autoantibodies.

It is about a 4hr trip each way for me, but I am considering making the trek. :)

In case any of you are rich/lucky enough to get to England (or, indeed, live in the UK) for this, George is also speaking at the Institute of Biomedical Science's Congress in Birmingham on Tuesday 27th September 2011 on the subject of, "Historical, current and future technologies of red cell antibody screening and identification", between 10.30 and 11.30.

The incredibly lucky person who is Chairing this session is one Malcolm Needs (and he is hugely honoured so to do)!!!!!!!!!

I will put in a request with my manager to send me on a trip to the UK for the September meeting ;) (like that would fly). Of course by then she may want a vacation from me and be willing to consider it. :begone:

:haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha: Yes, I think that would be an excellent work related expense trip to England! If we didn't just build a new hospital maybe it could have been considered. Hahahahahaha!

When I made the request to attend a seminar in September my manager immediately asked where it was, Hawaii?(I think she knows me too well). I answered no that it is in England. After a strange look she laughingly told me to leave. I said if not England in September, then how about Louisville in April? She told me she would think about it ;). Thanks Malcolm! This might work in my favor lol.

The only time I have heard George Garratty give a lecture was at the Blood Group Serology conference at Durham University UK in the year 2000. If I recall correctly he talked about Warm AIHA's and the difficulties of providing cross-matched red cells. I also seem to remember that he attended the dinner that night and the social event too and certainly entered into the spirit of the conference. It was a memorable conference and one I really enjoyed.

Deny, ditto from Dr. Pepper - I've heard him a couple of times over the years and he's terrific. It's a splendid excuse for a road trip.

Going to be a very long day, but I have decided to make the trip to Louisville in April. Sorry I will not be attending the session in September in England Malcolm. Let us know how that session turns out. I will try to post a followup after the April session.

I will certainly report on the September meeting.

Hi Malcolm

can you give me the details of the event in September, please. Switzerland to UK is not so far. I would really like to come. Thanks

Hi Anna,

Your best bet is to put "Institute of Biomedical Science" into your search engine.

You will then have access to the latest draft of the programme and (hopefully, although I'm not sure about this) how to apply for a place, how much a place costs and what hotels are near the venue. If not, please feel free to get back to me.

Thanks Malcolm. I am actually still a member of the IBMS - but haven't seen anything in the gazette. Will it be in the April one? I always have problems with the web site - mainly as I forget my password!!!
