Is Rh Ig a "derivative"? Should disposition records be kept for 10 years?

We keep a copy of the RHIG form 5 years and one copy is on the chart. We also can look it up in our computer forever (or close to it). That's always worked for us.

The AABB considers Rh immune globulin a derivative. See the Glossary in the BB/TS Standards:

"Derivatives: Sterile solutions of a specific protein(s) derived from blood or by recombinant technology (eg, albumin, plasma protein fraction, immune globulin, and factor concentrates)."

The retention period for AABB for derivatives is 10 years (5.18.2.1 and 6.2E). At least it's the same period as blood products so one system should work for both...

Our pharmacy dispenses it at my hospital. All we do is report the percent fetal haemoglobin to the care provider. The pharms do the calculation too. Does anyone else do it this way?? thanks

We do it the same. The pharmacy dispenses and we report the percent fetal hemoglobin. I think the nurses do the calculation, though.

Thanks for your reply to this question. In the interim I have also checked with the CAP (College of American Pathology) and they OK'd that type of process too!
