My hospital Medical Director has asked how our blood component usage compares to other hospitals of similar size and patient population. Does anyone know of utilization stats tied to discharges, average patient days, admissions, or similar hospital size/activity data? Any info will be appreciated.

We do not examine utilization with any of those criteria. For the past 18 yrs our CT ratio has been about 1.4. Transfuse about 500 rbcs/yr.

This topic has come up before. I can't imagine how any comparison standards could be established, since facilities have so much variation in their medical specialities/patient population, scope of services offered for trauma and surgery, etc. If anyone does have any information about this subject, please share.

Don't we have a resource right here? David gave his institution's C/T ratio. Ours ranges from 1.1. to 1.3. Pick some data we are already compiling, put it in a standard format and share.

I think crldehart's Medical Director is looking for stats more on usage, not necessarily the C/T ratio. Totally agree with L106 that it would be so difficult to compare two hospitals of the same size; for example: one has trauma, the other has L&D, etc. Also, is it a teaching hospital? Usage at my previous hospital was much lower than my current one but that is because we had a Blood Conservation/Bloodless Medicine program there. Some brilliant programmer out there should figure a way to factor in all these differences so we could compare apples to oranges. It is always so helpful to know how others are transfusing, and if there are ways that we could improve our physicians' practice.
