just for curiosity...

in my lab when we have to release blood components technicians

-receive blood's request

-choose blood components

-perform compatibility tests

-confirm results in the computer system

-issue units for transfusion

Physicians

-sign blood's requests (but only during the day and sometimes after the issuing of the blood products... )

-sign group reports

This only if all compatibyty tests are negative.

If there is a positive test we have to call physicians.

How is in your labs?

Our physicians only order blood for patients, and right now is it still a handwritten request ( we go up with computer physician ordering next summer). We call for positives only if there is a transfuse order and we will be delayed in supplying compatible products or if the patient is pre-op. If the patient has a pos screen and is in OB for example and it is clearly just passive Anti-D from Rhogam, or Le-a or Le-b which is also transient, we don't call. It is a case by case basis.

As for the techs, well we do everything else, pretty much like your list.
