After reading a thread re:WAAs and the use of PEG for autoadsorptions our lab here is considering adopting this method. It will however lead us to use much higher volumes of PEG which we are now purchasing by a manufacturer.

Do any of you all make your own 20% PEG solution? If so,

your recipe and recommended expiry date would be much appreciated.

My presumption is that the QC would be similar to what the package insert for the

commerically prepared solutions would be.

With the exception that 4 drops be used in lieu of two.

Any and all response will be greatly welcomed.

I really do not know the answer to your question . . . if I inspected you, I think that I would want to see more than just qc worked . . . once you get into "manufacturing" a product multiple ramifications come into existence. Since you will be using the product to provide (manufacture?) blood products, the FDA will want to be involved. You might contact them to see what they would scrutinize . . . you are better off purchasing the product.

I agree with you Dave, I am waiting for my very first order, it costs ~ one tenth of WARM, and not worth the headache of making it in house.

By the way thanks for all the advice!! :-)

I would think you could by powdered PEG reagent from a chemical vendor like Fisher Scientific, and then make the appropriate dilution to give you 20% PEG. I understand the concerns of making in house reagents and needing them validated. Our laboratory has a procedure to make 22% albumin, and ,as far as I know, no one asks us anything about it. To me, it's the same thing, different enhancement medium. I would still see about contacting the FDA or an accrediting agency like CAP to see what they have to say. You may also have to research PEG, because I am under the impression there are different lengths of polymers, and I don't know if you need a certain length of PEG for reagent use.
