We do autocontrol with all ABIDs. Do any of you also do autocontrol with all antibody screening tests (we do not).

Years ago an autocontrol was standard with all antibody screens but that has fallen by the way side. There are a number of papers out there indicating the lack of value of the procedure. I believe the University of Michigan was amoung the first to move away from routine auto controls with all antibody screens.

We do an autocontrol with antibody screens only if specifically ordered by our Oncologists - they request that we do it that way. (We do not, however, do the auto with crossmatches for our Onc patients.) Otherwise, we do not do autos with routine antibody screens.

What excuse, sorry, reason do the oncologists give for wanting an auto put up with the screen? I presume they have a reason?

Though I've asked, I've never gotten an excuse or a reason that makes any sense. (My tiny mind actually wonders if they know why they want it - something their mentor always did, perhaps.) My conversations with them lead me to think that they don't really understand what it is we are doing when we do an autocontrol - perhaps they are unable to communicate what it is that they really need.

Malcolm and Ann.....Those were my thoughts exactly..........I would be amazed if any physician understood what an auto control is and what its purpose is.

Autocontrol is not necessary when performing antibody screen in pretransfusion testing. However, it is very useful in antibody workup. Put up a DAT when autocontrol is positive.

Hope that helps.

At our facility an autocontrol is tested with all antibody ID's if the antibody screen is positive.
