Hello fellow blood bankers-

I want to share my joy with you all. On Friday, I sat for the SBB exam and

I PASSED IT

on the first try! It was very stressful and intense, and I am so glad that it is over. For anyone out there who is considering taking the test, I wish you all the luck in the world! There is another thread out there about tips for passing the exam...I went through a CAAHEP program, used the Technical Manual, Denise Harmening's "Modern Blood Banking and Transfusion Practices" (5th ed), and the Blood Group Antigen Facts Book as my primary study materials. I also want to say what a valuable resource this website is -- especially the case studies!

YAY congrats Heather! I know what a load off your mind that is. Now, trying to remember all that stuff... right? In my opinion there are books for that.

Big high five for you.

Congratulations. Yes it is a hard exam and I too would never have passed it without going through a SBB program. I can recommend the program at Rush University.

Congrats Heather!

I think all the accredited programs out there are very helpful, I did the program at Florida Blood Services myself (and used those exact 3 books).

Brilliant news Heather (although, from the high standards of your posts, I never had any doubts)!!!!!!!

You go girl!

It's tough, but you sure do have a feeling of accomplishment when you've done it.

Heather -

Way to go, Heather!!! Isn't that a relief to successfully have that behind you? (So now what are you going to do with all of your spare time??)

Congratulations. You should be very proud of yourself! (Now go forth and spread your knowledge and enthusiasm with every new student you encounter!

What am I going to do with my spare time?

NOTHING AT ALL!!!

I spent 6 1/2 years of my life getting my first BS, another 1 1/2 getting my 2nd BS and MT, and another 2 years studying for the SBB. I'm ready for a break!!! Although, each time I have said that, I have found myself back in school within a year or two :).

I'll probably come up with something else to go back to school for...at least an MBA...but probably not until the kids are a little older.

Brings to mind a Medical Technologist student we had in our lab a few years ago. She was not quite the "traditional" student; she was married, had four children (all at home), and drove about and hour and a half every morning and afternoon during the training year. In March the class had a one week Spring Break. I asked her was she was going to do during her week off.

She replied, "Laundry!"

joe0310 - Do a "Quick Search" (top lefthand area of this screen) for BSS Exam, and you will probably pull up several threads that talk about the exam. (I know that in some of the threads many posters talk about what references were the most helpful for them to study.)

I think L106 means "SBB exam", but I listed my resources in my original post, too. Good luck if you choose to self-study!

Love the avatar, but, somehow, without being rude, I imagined you as slightly older than that.

Magnificent to have passed the exam at this age!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Malcom :-). That is my 8-month old son, Austin. I need to get a picture with him and his (almost) 4-year old sister, Ashley, together.

Congrats Heather!

I will be taking the exam around October....
