As part of a research project I have to look for ways to streamline reference lab. procedures (a Lean approach). I have to make changes in our antibody ID procedure in the way to reduce Turn-around-time, commit less errors, and increase productivity. They want me to look at the Pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of the process.

Does anyone have experience or comment about?

The process that I personally like is to flowchart the entire process using the greatest detail possible. Once the flowchart is completed, look at each step and ask:

1) What is the cost of this step?

2) Does this step add value to the process? If not, why are we doing this step?

3) Can this step be eliminated?

4) Is there another step that could replace this step at a lower cost?

By performing this flowchart, make you REALLY examine the process in its entirety. Cost can be money, or employee time--both are valuable.

We are literally just starting to go through this process at my lab.

I'll report back on progress.

Have a look at the traqprogram here... http://www.traqprogram.ca/products.asp

The manuals are excellent, can be easily adjusted to your own procedures & simple too!
