I would like to determine how many labs use specific software for electronic issue of blood, or whether 'work a round' procedures are used

In the UK the specifications for this software should conform to the BCSH guidelines for IT systems.

Many thanks!

By "electronic issue", do you mean electronic crossmatch?

Most US transfusion services are computerized and keep their records online, so there is an electronic verification at issue. There may be some small rural sites without a computer that still have a manual system.

We are working feverishly at computerizing the nurse's transfusion administration record, so we can eliminate the last vestige of blood bank paperwork throughout the facility.

By 'electronic issue' I mean an issue of red cells without a serological crossmatch, but computer algorithms verify the following:

Sample bled date criteria is met and consistant with the UK BCSH guidelines for testing

Previous blood group on system

Antibody screen neg

No history of any antibodies

Blood group results were transferred electronically across the LIMS interface, not manually

and a few other things.

Are we talking about the same thing?

Thanks for your reply.

We do not have electronic crossmatch and I will not implement untill my system allows it. I do not want to rely on techs to do multiple checks..that doesn't mean my techs are not capable but I like to make use of computer system as mush as possible so we do not put too much burden on techs.

We use software. I do not recommend doing "electronic" issue (crossmatch) without the "electronic" controls!

So to brainstorm what good 'electronic issue' software has compared to system without this, am I right to assume that there would still need to be manual overrides to the rules regarding sample timings, antibody screen result, presence of historical antibodies, automatic transfer of results ( to allow urgent issue ) ?

Am I missing anything significant ?

Thanks!

Our computer system is tested and validated for computer (electronic) crossmatch. However, we are still waiting for the final decision from the Medical Director to implement the computer crossmatch process.
