Hello, I am 20 and pregnant with my first child and first pregnancy, 21 weeks gone. I was told by my doctor at 9 weeks that i had anti Cw and that i was K kell negative. My doctor doesnt seem to be able to answer my questions and only told me to ask my midwife (whom I have only seen once) who also couldnt give me any information and only told me to ask my doctor. My blood group is A pos Rhesus D. I know that my blood was previously healthy as i have donated blood since i was 17.

If anyone can give me some, ANY information, it will really help. if you need to know anything else let me know

Thanks

Bianca

Hi

congratulations on your pregnancy

anti-Cw is a naturally occuring red cell antibody , it can cause Haemaolytic disease of the newborn ( mild to moderate)

your ante natal clinic should take some more blood from you at 28 weeks to recheck your red cell antibody screen and exclude any other antibodies which you may have produced since your first test at booking in

As only approx 2% of the population are Cw(+) I would expect this anti-Cw to cause you no problems ie your partner is probably also like you Cw(-).

Regarding being Kell negative , 90% of caucasians are Kell Negative. You do not state that you have an anti-Kell antibody so that will be all ok as well. If you did have an anti-Kell they would monitor the titre ( strength) of the antibody in your blood through pregnancy and collect a sample from your partner to phenotype him for the Kell antigen

All females under 60 years in the UK receive Kell negative blood automatically to avoid Kell negative recipients potentially developing their own anti-Kells if they receive Kell Positive blood, this I would expect is common practive everywhere

Best wishes :)
