I recently read an article in Transfusion magazine regarding allowing 16 year olds to donate blood. This is premitted in 6 states. I would like to know if this is a state law or does it fall under the guidelines of the FDA and/or the AABB? Any information on this subject would be greatlty appreciated. Please e-mail me with any information.

Did the article have references? That might be a good source.

In the state of Massachusetts the minimum age is 17.

Our donor centers will take 15 & 16 year old donors (usually directed) with a parental authorization and MD approval. State law in California states that 17 year old donors are acceptable.
