  1. My confusion is, for simplicity 1 in 9 random pRBC units will have HLA matching leukocytes with a patient. If we are trying to prevent graft vs host disease, shouldn't we irradiate pRBC? Or is the leukocytes count in pRBC insignificant?
  2. A patient was tested positive for HLA antibody in platelet refractory panel. We were recommended to transfuse irradiated crossmatched platelet units. Irradiated to prevent graft vs host reaction. But we were informed that transfusion of leuko-reduced pRBC did not have to irradiated unless doctor specified. Can anyone explain the logic? Reference lab screened 9 units of platelets to find 1 compatible unit.
  3. Our lab is receiving cord in either EDTA tube or serum tube. Is washing required for ABO typing on a cord blood sample to minimize the affects of Wharton's jelly? I'm founding couple literatures on Wharton's jelly with DAT but none on ABORh. Sorry to make a new posting about this topic, I didn't realize there was posting of "washing cord blood". But I am specifically looking for reference. If AABB manual, what page? I'm just not finding it.
