Here in Sweden the understanding is that leukocyte filtration (ie, less than 5x106 leukocytes per component) equals a CMV functionally negative product, so there is no need to select CMV negative products. Irradiation is performed when we're dealing with stem cell transplanted patients, since even with those tiny amounts of leukocytes in leukodepleted components they can still develop a Graft-vs-Host like reaction.
