Epic Transfusion Administration System?
It is my understanding that EPIC does not have and does not plan to develop an FDA cleared blood bank (transfusion management) system. Since the functionality you are describing would be considered an extension of the blood bank (transfusion management) system it is my understanding this functionality would require FDA clearance.

Cutting off blood bank ID bands
I agree with John and jhession that complicating the process by having multiple armbands does not make the process safer. Point-of-Care patient identification is not an issue that is unique to the blood bank. The need for Positive Patient Identification extends to all areas of patient care such as medication administration for pharmacy, specimen collection for core laboratory even to patient identification for milk feedings in the NICU. A single hospital wide barcoded armband with multiple patient identifiers combined with a point-of-care solution using the barcoded information to identify the patient, label specimen and match the patient to the medication, blood, milk or other products being administered is the safest solution.

Hema-Trax ID BB ID bands
Shelley, Have you taken a look at the point-of-care, positive patient identification and transfusion documentation system available from Mediware? This systems uses 2D barcode technology to identify the patient based on five pieces of information and then prints the specimen label at the bedside. When a transfusion is needed the system uses the same technology to positively identify the patient, match the patient to the unit of blood and then allows the caregiver to enter the transfusion documentation all at the point-of-care.

ORs at satellite locations - requiring crossmatched blood!
Mediware has a solution you may want to take a look at. It is called BloodSafe™ and is a 510(K) cleared system for remote storage and management of blood. BloodSafe is equivalent to a “Pyxis†system for blood management. BloodSafe’s remote release refrigerator management provides a controlled environment that is monitored from the blood bank making blood products quickly and safely available throughout the hospital or at remote locations.
