Lectin usage
Are ther other vendors than HemoBioscience that sell the kit of several lectins?

Lectin usage
For those of you in reference labs that use lectins, do you purchase them or make them? The Judd Method book has excellent procedures and I was curious if anyone ventured into this. HemoBioScience has a lectin kit, but perhaps making them is more economical. To obtain IRL accreditation, we are required to have lectins that are not on the market. Thanks in advance for your input.

Ordering a New Centrifuge/Sero-fuge
We have the Serofuge 2001 and they are fine. There is another model that has a high/low speed setting, which would have been nice to have. I was unaware they are no longer being made. Check what Helmer has. I observed a benchtop model at AABB and was very impressed. Good luck.

IRL help
I'm from the Central Illinois Community Blood Center in Springfield, IL. We are desparately trying to get the last of the samples needed to meet IRL accreditation requirements. I seem to have exhausted my "connections" and am asking for help. If you have any of the following, would you be willing to do an exchange for excess that I may have? Just an FYI, we have a regular donor with anti-Dia (3+) from which I have plasma available. My email is knail@cicbc.org. I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks, Kimberly:) Needed Anti-sera: Anti-Jk3, Anti-Hy, Anti-Joa, Anti-Gya, Anti-Ce, Anti-Rh32, Anti-Sc1, Anti-Sc2, Anti-Dob, Anti-LWab, Anti-LWa, Anti-PP1Pk, Anti-Vell, Anti-VS Needed red cell samples: Lua+b-, Lua-b-, Dia+b-, Gya-, Oh (Bombay), PP1Pk-, Vel-, Lu:-6, Coa-b-, r’r’, râ€râ€, e variant, RH null, K null, Ge:-2,3, Cra-, McCa-, Sla-, JMH-, P-, Csa-, Lan-, Ata-, Jra-, AnWj-, Sda-

Incompatible Warm Auto: Dr's Sign?
As a Reference Lab, we perform alloadsorbtions quite frequently. We only perform AHG crossmatches on unadsorbed plasma, rather than alloadsorbed plasma, and select the "least incompatible" units. Our reports only state "least incompatible" with all units distributed as crossmatched on patients with autoantibodies. This was a decision OUR medical director made. We don't want to sugar coat the issue of compatibility in these patients because of the in vivo response to the units. Recommendations are to avoid transfusions in these patients, thus it makes the clinician think twice before transfusing. I think we are providing misleading information if we report the units as compatible. Our local hospitals are doing the same procedure and make the clinician sign a release form for the units. They may not like it, but the ultimate decision to transfuse these units is in their hands. If problems with the clinician arise, refer them to the medical director.:eyepoppin

blood bank reagents
We have just started using the antisera and have not had any problems. Reactivity strength seems to be consistent with the current antseras of Ortho and Immucor. Many of the antisera have only 5 minute incubations, so that is a plus. The centrifugation times are a little different for some of the antisera (20 sec). Make sure you request a Reference Guide from your vendor. It will help with performing at the right temp, time, and centrifugation times. The prices seem to be very competitive, but be careful that you see the quantity of the reagents. Although I, historically, prefer Immucor and Ortho, it's nice to have another alternative when supplies are on backorder. Good Luck
