  1. Heat elution to detect Rh HDN

I can assure you Yanxia, that when I started at the Blood Group Reference Laboratory (way back in 1973), we used to use heat elution (56oC) and it worked fine! Incidentally, I would recommend the Lui technique for ABO HDFN.
  2. Ruling out Kell with Heterozygous cells?

Malcolm, I believe there is a section header in Issitt & Anstee's book that says "There is no anti-Kell." The first time I saw that (before I read the paragraph below), I almost fell off my chair. Issitt could not write a text book without putting those little things in there either!
  3. Partial Auto Release of CBCs

We do a partial release after reviewing the flag and it is determined that the flag is not one that interferes with the WBC,RBC or PLT count. For instance a suspect platelet clump which may or may not be due to actual platelet aggregation, NRBC's, giant platelets, or even dwarf megakaryocytes. We would NOT do a partial release until a smear is reviewed for verification. In the case of flags for morphology review or suspect immature cells, we would manually release (like nziegler in the past) the hemogram portion of a CBC and "hold" the differential for smear review.
  4. Antibody Titer methodology

The CAP survey for Antibody Titers has been following the different methodologies for some time. The result bell curves for gel is always higher than any tube methodology using the Uniform Procedure CAP recommends (The titer is run in saline with no enhancement medias). If you switch to gel you will need to let your physicians know why the results are higher.

I'm also getting ready to test out the ShockWatch TrekView gadget - to monitor internal temperature of the cooler - they are less than $50 each. Can be used up to 26 times. They are cute, too!

We recently purchased a ScanTemp 485 temp gun. Have been very pleased. Validated it against our NIST thermometer. Of course, now we are discarding more products .
  7. Windows 7 and Blood Bank LIS

Without disclosing the vendor, the problem was that the tech could select a patient name to work on, but the application would display a different name. The was corrected after the tech changed their personal Display settings in Windows 7. The application was initially validated using Windows XP and there were no performance issues. The application is approved to run on Windows 7 by the vendor...apparently they did not experience this same issue. My only intention of this post is to heighten your awareness of potential problems with Windows 7 and your BBIS.
