Extending TS out-date for outpatients

Recommended Posts

We use Soft as our LIS system and looking in the possibility of extending outdate of Type and Screen specimens to 27 days for outpatients. There are hosparam which can be set for outpatients and inpatients in Soft but I don't know how they will play in different situations. If anyone using Soft system and extending the outdate of TS then please advise.

thanks,

We use the Soft LIS system. Our pre-admission outpatient specimens are extended for 14 days if the patient hasn't been pregnant or transfused in the last 3 months. We are able to update the expiration date for the sample in Patient -> Orders -> Modify when we are reviewing the patient's history and receiving the specimen in the Blood Bank. The expiration is automatically set at 3 days for all patients, so the tech receiving the specimen makes the change manually.

So, if the patient gets transfused and the sample is still valid for 10 days in the LIS, does the tech then need to manually edit the expiry date to 96 hours?

Yes, that is exactly what we do once we make sure that they are, indeed, on the OR schedule for that morning, and they have NOT been transfused since the screen was done.  An appropriate comment is attached to the change.

Thanks Scott and LK11.  We are looking at something similar here but with Meditech.  I'm just not sure how to track/make sure the correct expiry date is in there.  Although, I'm not sure how we are tracking it now either... 😰

Virtually same workflow.  We set for 3 days post-op; maximum 14 days from draw as long as not pregnant/transfused in last three months.  Our latest upgrade (25.3.1) automatically resets outdate if patient happens to get a packed cell in that pre-op window.
