Who draws the blood bank specimens in your facilities?  Here the laboratory draws all blood bank specimens and we use another blood bank band that has a barcode in addition to using the TAR.  We do have mobilab also.  Currently when the patients blood bank band is removed or cut off, our policy is that they have to be redrawn again by lab and the blood bank testing must start over again.  Thinking that using the patient armband with mobilab would prevent this redrawing policy as long as the patient information is verified prior to tranfusion.  Any thoughts or experience on this?  We use meditech 6.1.

We use MobiLab and do not have a separate Blood Bank wristband.  We love MobiLab! We are able to use hematology specimens if they are labeled with a patient wristband label at the time of collection.  Our specimens are collected by phlebs, ER folks, and L&D nurses. If the patient ID band is removed and not immediately replaced in a different location, we require a new specimen to be collected and tested.  We also have Temporary ID bands (TID) from Biologics that we use in times of computer downtime.

What is everyone doing in TAR with a patient that is being transfused and then needs to be transferred to another facility? You may never know the actual stop time. Should the nurse put the stop time as when the patient left and approximate the volume of blood transfused or is that falsifying records? When I go in to look at these units it tells me that PCS is still in the process of entering transfusion data, which to me means the nurse is still on the transfusion in TAR, but will probably never look at it again since the patient has been transferred.

This is way late to reply but in our ER, the nurse documents that the patient was transferred and is SUPPOSED to end the transfusion. That rarely happens. We review all transfusions daily for incomplete TAR. My biggest issue with TAR is nurses not changing the intake to the correct volume or not ending the transfusion in TAR.
