COBE 2991 washing apheresis platelets

Does anyone use the COBE 2991 cell processor to wash apheresis platelets?

My question is in regard to the equipment QC--should there be a sterility check? Cannot find information anywhere that this is needed.  The washed product has 4 hour expiration; use the sterile kits(single use); use 1 Liter sterile saline bags(single use). Quarterly QC includes pre-/post- platelet counts and pre-/ post-  protein level.  Cannot find support for sterility check anywhere....but still looking.

We have not washed platelets before on the Cobe, do you do it in a closed system?  As you pointed out, it's a 4 hour product, regardless of it being closed.  When we pooled platelets and pooled cryo we never did sterility QC.

I would not think a sterility check would be required.

Hi qualitygal-

I'm glad that you found what you were looking for! I was wondering if you would be so kind to share your validation results?

And any other literature talking about the quarterly QC being done? I know some hospitals have been doing this washing method on the COBE 2991 but I have had no luck so far getting the numbers.
