ADawson
We recently switched from serum to plasma (K2 EDTA pink top) as the specimen of choice for our main blood bank needs. We perform our ABO/Rh testing by tube method and we use the gel method for Antibody Screening. Since we switched I have noticed that specimens used after refrigeration tend to produce what looks like fibrin in tube testing. Have any of you experienced this and what if any was your fix? adiescast
We have been using pink tubes for years and I have not heard of any problems with fibrin after refrigeration. What tube manufacturer are you using?
L106
We have been using pink tubes for several years and haven't had any problems, either.
rravkin@aol.com
Are you allowing the specimen to come to room temp prior to use?
ADawson
The manufacturer of our pink tubes is BD and yes we do allow tubes to come to room temp before use.
Dar
Ortho's Nancy Mann always recomended mixing the tube well & re-spinning prior to testing. It works for us.
Sandy L
Ocassionally we see this phenomenon and think it mat be due to cryoglobulins precipitating in the cold. Re-spinning the sample before testing will clear up any problems.
