October 10, 200915 yr comment_17950 hi everyone. After reading all of the msges here, my fear of taking the SBB exam just went greater and greater. I am so scared right now. What if i don't pass it???????You need to be positive and confident about taking the exam. Lots of revision and practice like the folks on this thread are suggesting. If after all your hard work you don't pass...then life goes on and you try again. There is nothing to be ashamed about failing exams, we've probably all at some stage in our lives not done as well with things that we would have liked to. The main thing is to continue trying until you succeed. Goood luck!

I took the SBB (about 9 years ago) after 20+ years in a large, academic BB / Transfusion service. Had I not stumbled upon an add about the "Last Chance Review" online and gone to Houston to attend the sessions (before there was an online option) there's absolutely NO WAY I could've passed! I totally agree that there were A LOT of questions that I felt were geared more towards the clinicians rather than the techs - but, then again, I'd only worked in one BB so, all I knew was how we did things...... Going to those review sessions showed me that I was studying all wrong. I came back and took ALL the powerpoint printouts they gave and picked them apart page by page, researching any topic I felt unsure about (which was most of them!). I ended up passing the first time..... I know others who have purchased the documents from these review sessions over more recent years and have passed as well.....cheaper than a program and something you'll keep forever!

June 15, 20241 yr comment_89194 I took the SBB exam about 4 years ago and the best thing I found to help prepare was AABB’s Transfusion Medicine Self-Assessment and Review book. It has multiple choice questions based off the Technical Manual and explanations for all the answers. It really helps get you into the exam mindset and see what areas you still need to focus on. It’s not exactly cheap but less than having to take the test twice so I think it was worth it.
June 21, 20241 yr comment_89256 I took my exam in 2017 after going through the NIH SBB program in Maryland. I highly recommend that program to anyone who is looking for in person program. The passing rate after the program for the SBB exam is at 90% for the last 10 years. It is free, you work there and get paid and learn from the best in the industry, and it is in person. I did not study outside the class provided materials and got 630 on the exam. Prior to that I had 6 years of BB leadership experience in the smaller Regional hospitals. I can provide contact info for the program if anyone interested.
