Validating/Calibrating Thermometers

I want to purchase a reference thermometer for annual checks of our lab thermometers. For anyone that does this, is there ever an issue with using a reference probe to take the temperature and comparing it to the fridge/freezer/incubator units that have their probes immersed in a sealed glycol bottle? If so, how do you get around this. I know most say to buy new units, but we also have offsite units and the nurses there can't be trusted not to mix up the units and their probes.  Since we use all digital units, I should be able to validate each one at its operating temperature. If I can use a reference unit with a probe and just take the fridge, etc temperature next to our installed units to validate them, it would be much quicker. I just don't know if it works in practice, and was looking to get some real world feedback before buying a reference unit.

Thanks
