R1R2 got a reaction from John C. Staley in Cleaning the Helmer Plasma Thawer
You could use bottled water (gallon size). Did you try vinegar? Not sure if that is kosher for plasma thawers but it works in my dishwasher.

R1R2 got a reaction from BldBnker in Helmer Freezer Validation
I have never used plasma to validate a freezer. I have validated that alarms work, temp is accurate, plugged into proper receptacle, chart works, door seals properly, unit maintains temp etc.

If you want to validate that the freezer can circulate cold air when filled with plasma you can use anything to fill the freezer, such as bags of water or saline.

R1R2 got a reaction from AMcCord in Saline incubation...why is this SOP still allowed?
We are a CAP accredited lab and 2x year we compare all our testing methods. We compare gel, LISS, PEG, saline techniques. All methods have detected all clinically significant antibodies.

R1R2 got a reaction from albaugh in Return of used blood
Returned blood bags are a risk and an outdated practice IMO. I have never seen one that didn't leak all over the place, floor, bag counter, fridge, even when placed in a plastic bag. And then there was the occasional needle to deal with. We save segments.

R1R2 got a reaction from JeanB in Blood Bank Lead - Any advice, tips, ?
Congrats! Become very knowledgeable in all things BB. Read everything you can get your hands on and go to outside meetings. Learn why we do the things we do. Don't be afraid to change things that were always done that way. Get to know other BB leads/supervisors in other hospitals, they are a great resource. Don't let the staff push you around, you are not their mother or babysitter. Know the difference between anti A and anti A1 (pet peeve of mine). You got this!!!

R1R2 reacted to Townsend in LISS Validation?
Yes, you should do at least a small parallel study using the old and the new. Your director will have to decide on how many would be acceptable and define acceptability criteria prior to implementation. I would summarize and have them sign-off before placing it into use.

R1R2 reacted to Gkloc in Blood Bank Lead - Any advice, tips, ?
I would familiarize yourself with whatever regulations your lab is accredited with (AABB, CAP, TJC). That helps get you an understanding of what needs to be done and why.

To this I will add, pick your battles carefully. Make sure they are worth fighting. If you came from outside the facility be very judicious when using the phrase, "The way we did it"! Changing something to the way you did it else where is not necessarily a change for the better just because it makes you comfortable. Make sure you understand your new facility's processes before trying to incorporate sweeping changes. As I noted above, much of my advise would depend on if you came from outside or promoted from within. This is just one golden nugget for you to consider.
