Hello,
My lab (located in the US) is embarking on a project to bring on board the blood banking portion of a sister hospital, along with allowing satellite locations to perform transfusions of units that we have crossmatched and prepared. Our lab is currently accredited by AABB and CAP.
We are going to purchase fridges/platelet incubators that can be remotely monitored (temp, alarm, access) so that employees at the facility can remove products that have been crossmatched for their patients. In the case of the hospital, we will also have a stock of O neg red cells for emergency purposes.
I am looking for any advice or warnings from others that have similar set ups in their facilities. For those of you accredited by AABB, do they consider that sister hospital under your umbrella as far as transfusions go - or do they consider it completely separate since it is not being conducted physically in your facility. I was thinking of setting these locations up as out-of-hospital transfusion services, but am now rethinking that logic.
Thanks!
