pinktoptube got a reaction from MaryPDX in Interpreting "weak" results on MTS cards.
I have this issue also. The guide doesn't give a weak reaction as a result. I always go by if it's a pellet with a few "specks" it's negative....why search for zebras.

We give group O, so no AHG crossmatch.

pinktoptube got a reaction from KLCarter in saline expiration date
I cannot say for certain if the 30 day expiration is from the manufacturer or another source. However decided that if the saline is used for dilutions of antisera or albumin we would use which ever expiration is shorter (of course ends up being the 30 days expiration for the opened saline cube). I'm sure if you validated the extension (no impact on treatments) then it shouldn't be a problem.

    Change things as in?
From my experience, a persons understanding, willing to learn, and pro-activeness is dependent on the person and not whether they are a MLT or MT.

I don't. It was validated once, unless the tube station or carriers change I don't see why re-validate?
We don't require any documentation to be sent to us, basically they send the tube back and if we don't receive it within 5 minutes we call the floor.

pinktoptube got a reaction from exlimey in Eye protection requirements (GEN.74100 & 74200)
We do not require techs to wear eye protection. However, it is in our policy that the splash guard be used when handling uncapped samples....compliance though is low.

pinktoptube reacted to DebbieL in Patient Informed Consent and Zika Virus
I am far from an expert on consents.... That being said, I wouldn't think the consent should list the things they could contract from blood products, because something new could immerge (like Zika) and we couldn't get the consent changed in time to meet the need. It takes an act of congress to change any form at my place and it has to be blessed by everyone that has anything to do with the form. Months!
I think it should be somewhat vague so that the hospital is covered. "you could be exposed to viruses or other infectious agents" Zike would be included in that part. My 2 cents

pinktoptube reacted to FFlovesBB in Terumo sterile connecting device validation
    Hello everyone,
I need help setting up a validation protocol for a Terumo sterile docking device. I assume a certain number of acceptable "welds" must be performed but beyond that, I don't have any other ideas. Any suggestions??
    Thanks!

    1) Do you still use charts? No
    2) Do you take daily recording? No, the CTM monitors the temperatures consistently and daily prints the 4 hour readings.
    3) If you take manual recording, which readings? We only take manual recording if the CTM is down, or if there is an alarm we will comment the internal thermometer reading.
    4) How do you monitor your CTM? Check for functionality daily, it also has an annual PM.
    5) What kind of reports do you print? The system automatically prints the previous days 4 hours recordings and any alarms w/ comments.
    6) Do you run into problem where you do not have readings and do not have charts? No, if the system is down (which rarely happens) we perform manual temps readings.

The download option is only available on new devices (when they started this I do not know). I have a mixture of new and old, the new one we download the readings.

Besides making your own blind samples, couldn't you use a sample previously tested and just take off the identifiers?

I haven't used aerocom tube systems, but the tubes systems I have used have been fine with transportation of blood components.

Suggest using a slower infusion rate, aliquot  (lower volume), or only transfuse if medically necessary?
I'm curious how everyone is looking at handling this requirement.

pinktoptube got a reaction from Lifeandplasma in Transfusion Record
We performed a daily review on all returned transfusion record carbon copies and any missing information was highlighted on a copy. This was sent as an official occurrence to the nurse manager for follow-up. It took a little over of a year of this before we consistently received over 95% compliance.

I don't. I was just told that they have always done this and it works (no reactions). I've never heard of this and wasn't quiet sure what to say...except why. I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to find a reference as to why this is not beneficial.

Depending on the manufacturer, the packing dividers of the reagents can be used to hold them in place.
