Has anyone seen this Youtube video? It is a movie about the Lewis system and it is made by Stephen Schilling. He has also made simmilar video's about the MNS, Kell, Duffy, Kidd and Lutheran system. You can also find them on Youtube ( search for 'blood group song' or his name). I specialy like the MNS movie, where M and N are show as a few simple geeks, S, s and U are shown as dangerous criminals. Very funny. A co-worker of my found them and I have planed to use them in future lessons on this systems. Have fun watching the video's. Peter

Good Morning. Can anyone give me insight on on how Vital Signs can be set up in TAR so vital signs do not flow into lab as comments? When this occurs, all the vital signs print out on an external lab report. My understanding is that the queries set up in NUR and TAR need to be built in lab so they flow as queries instead. I have been the chief tech at my current employer for 1 1/2 years. Prior to that I was a blood bank tech for 20 years. I know blood banking, but having only been a chief tech for a short time, I know that there is a lot that I don't know as far as regulations and performance improvement. As such, I fully expect that the inspectors (AABB/CAP) are going to find something that I have missed. I did do my self-inspection and I know we are strong in some areas and need clarification in others. It is impossible for me to fully address everything in the short time I have been there and with so many other things going on (new hospital computer system with CPOE, four new piece…

The blood bank recently received a comment card from a patient who was concerned about wearing the blood bank ID band before surgery. She received several questions regarding why she was wearing the bracelet. It was also brought to our attention that the bracelet contained protected information. We are looking into how we can address these concerns. Any thoughts?

Ok as most of you know I just took over as technical supervisor in a small hospital. I am the only dedicated blood banker all others are generalists that float through. We do not do a lot of blood bank/transfusions ~ 200 units a months. After reviewing the records for the last year I posted some criteria for times I would like called. -Anytime you get a FFP order (There have been several instances where A units were already liquid when an order came in on an O patient and O units were thawed, wasting the A units) (also several with normal coag and <20plt where the order was actually suposed to be platelets again wasted units) -Any platelet order in plt count >20 …

I found "Hot Topics" most appropriate for Christmas. Not good under ""öthers"". Preparations have started or will start soon. How do you spend your Christmas and how do you prepare the Lab/Blood Bank ??? Would you like to share, a nice relief from the stress of work. and we can gain from each others experiences and ideas, i know I can. Thanks.

From time-to-time there are some interesting threads on this site concerning how long a unit can be out of a fridge and then returned to the Blood Bank. Although I am fully aware that we all have to follow Guidelines and Regulations, there is, nevertheless, an interesting areticle that has just been published in Transfusion Medicine Reviews (I haven't had time to read it all yet myself) on this very subject for those who are interested. It is: Brunskill S, Thomas S, Whitmore E, McDonald CP, Doree C, Hopewell S, Staves J, Cardigan R, Murphy MF. What is the maximum time that a unit of red blood cells can be safely left out of controlled temperature storage? Transfusion …

How does your institution handle collection of specimens for a patient in isolation? Our phlebotomists have taped a biohazard bag to the door jam and placed labelled samples in the bag. Unfortunately after removing their gown etc. we have had several cases of forgetting the bag taped to the door. We are seeking perhaps a better method. Any ideas?

Hi there, I would be really interested to hear other blood bankers opinions on the following scenario: We have a patient with an autoantibody who is transfused 2 units red cells approx once every 2-3 weeks. I have always understood that patients with autoantibodies should have the autoantibodies adbsorbed from the sample (either in house or by a reference lab) in order to detect any underlying red cell antibodies that may be produced, and that this should be perfromed on every occasion that the patient requires blood to ensure that the lab is detecteding any recently produced red celll antibodies from recent transfusions. Some colleagues of mine have stated that this doe…

Cliff, this has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with blood transfusion, but is very close to my heart. If I'm wrong in posting it on this website, I apologise and will undertsand if you take it down...............but, the local council in Devon is trying to close down the Wolf Centre (where they are trying to conserve wolves). These creatures are amongst the most misunderstood in the entire world, and need as much protection as possible. If you agree with me and think that closing this Centre would be awful, please sign the petition here. (http://www.thewolfcentre.co.uk/page/save-the-centre-campaign/sign-our-petition) The more people who sign from throughout the world, the mor…

In our institution we are discussing what occurrences should be sent through our entire event management process. We are doing some benchmarking to see how other institutions are processing these items. We have three questions: 1. What system or categorizations or definitions do you have to define an event from a “non-event”? 2. What criteria are used to qualify an occurrence to become a recorded event (sent through event management process, but not necessarily reported to FDA) in your institution? 3. Do you have a "threshold" defined for those occurrences that are not considered an event but would be considered an annoyance that needs to be looked at? Thanks in adva…

Does anyone have a procedure that you’re willing to share for using the Sure-Tech Fetal Hemoglobin kit for testing Amniotic and other Body Fluids for the presence of Fetal Erythrocytes? The manufacture’s procedure which comes with the kit has explicate instructions for testing blood samples but is very vague for testing Amniotic and other Body Fluids.

Hi All, For those of you interested (like me!) and who are not yet aware of this, the third edition of this wonderful book has now been published. Sorry Cliff, I'm not sure if I should have put this in the Adverts bit, but I am posting it as a "fan", rather than having anything to do with the book or the authors myself. :excited::excited:
