My institution is sending RFPs to vendors for a hospital-wide web based temperature and environmental monitoring system. I have asked to be present for the vendor demos. I would appreciate any suggestions regarding what features to look for and what questions to ask each vendor. The Blood Bank and laboratory would have loved to have had one of these systems years ago but since we always did such a good job manually, our administration didn't see the point in it. The reason administration is looking at this type of solution now is that pharmacy and dietary are having difficulty with Joint Commission requirements for temperature monitoring of units that are outside of their…

I brought this up many years ago to one of the Reagent Manufacturing Companies (cannot recall now which one it was....Immucor, Gamma or Ortho....or maybe one of the ones that is no longer around). When changes are made to Manufacturer's Inserts (and they can be as minor as a change in 1 word, which we can spend a long time searching for), it would be really nice if the Manufacturer would indicate the changes on the inserts (i.e. maybe italicize what is changed; or underline it; or highlight it......just give us a clue)! We want to catch the significant changes, but not spend an hour reading and re-reading the insert to find the ever-so-subtle and non-significant chan…

Does anyone have an idea on what is the current pricing and/or recommendation for a blood irradiator for a small volume transfusion service. The estimated number of units per month requiring irradiation is 40 units a month. Does anyone know of a U.S. vendor/distributor for the Nordion products? I have submitted an inquiry on the Nordion website inquiring about pricing but have yet to receive a response.

Have any of you checked out the Antibody Identification Software at www.AntibodyCheck.com? If you NEVER again want to spend hours searching pages of panel antigrams for select cells you should look into it. It is reasonably priced (believe it or not) and has saved us in the last 3 years countless hours of Tech-time.

Our shipment of Rhophylac (Rh Immune Globulin) was delivered to pharmacy by mistake and was brought to us a day later. It remained at room temperature in the pharmacy for just under 24 hours. Will the potency or integrity of the product be significantly affected that we should discard the shipment, or is it safe to use?Thank you. Kathryn

For many years we have been using borosilicate glass tubes (12 x 75mm and 10 x 75mm) with a patch for writing on them to perform our blood bank testing that needs to be done in tubes. We currently purchase ours from Kimble-Chase - item numbers are 60A10BZW and 60B12BZW. As companies have merged over the years I guess things have changed because one of our blood bankers recently noticed some very small print above the barcode on the box of tubes that says: "For Research use only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures." I would consider blood bank testing performed in tubes to be a "diagnostic procedure", so we've gone in search of an alternate vendor for glass tubes with…

I know there's been discussions about this before but I wanted to see some fresh perspectives. Does anyone have a recommendation of a decent quality management system that they use? We're looking for customizable forms/reports and preferrably web-based. Something with work/task lists for follow up and handling scheduled deadlines and QA/QC events would be great. Thanks!!

Is there a mfg that makes just the "r-set" portion of the panel? That is, an antibody screen that represents the antigens of all common clinically significant antibodies, plus those required by FDA, but is negative for D. It can be used when the administration of Rh Immune Globulin is interfering with the antibody screen, instead of going to a full panel (or having to selecting certain cells from a panel). I don't want to waste the time and reagents doing a full panel, and I don't want to ruin my panel by using up cells 5, 6, 7, for example.

Hi everyone!!! I am doing some research into the potential of switching my facility to Rhophylac from Rhogam and I had a quick question. The last time the company was here (before my time:)), the safety device on the needle was not liked by some people - does anyone know if this has changed or can anyone give me feedback on what they think of the device? Thanks!!

We are developing software for a automated blood analyzer used for grouping and typing. I am trying to find out more details on what customers in a blood bank expect when interfacing with an instrument to an LIS such as a Cerner, SunQuest, etc. I really appreciate your time and comments: Do customers expect an LIS interface on day one when a new instrument is installed or is it more typical for the LIS interface to be phased in because of validation requirements? Are most hospital LIS setup to use the ASTM 1394-97 protocol? Is utilizing a shared network folder between the LIS and instrument an accepted implementation? Do patient sample tubes always have a barcode label…

Hi, I am looking for the catalog number and vendor for the little blue, plastic, disposable hemostats that are used in most blood banks and donor centers when preparing components or splitting units. They come in a case of 1000 ea. Thank you for your response. Sarah

Currently, my 200 bed regional hospital 45 minutes outside a metropolitan city uses Immucor Series 4 which contains MS201 and MS26 clones. I'd like to change vendors due to pricing. We only do weak D testing on cord samples or the rare investigation into a strong positive Fetalscreen sample or prior type discrepancy. I want to make sure we choose the most appropriate cost effective reagent for our hospital population. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to choose in the hospital setting? Maybe some pro's and con's for the different clones? Feedback on reactivity strength, etc? I'm considering the Bio-Rad blend.

Recent published statements about Hema Trax have been plain "mean spirited" and untrue. We feel it is appropriate to quote these statements and respond. "First-ever label-printing software compatible with any thermal printer" Sounds good! However; Digi-Trax has chosen to support Sato and Zebra; two of the leading world class printer companies. Both have stood the test-of-time while many have failed over the last 15 years. We have chosen industrial strength models to function reliably in your "Mission Critical" environment. Good assets last and the cost is depreciated. "Computype & NiceWare International LLC" Two companies to deal with, and then you buy printe…
