Hello,

I have been pestering my blood supplier for a year about getting us liquid plasma. I would love to know if you are using it and who your supplier is? Also, if you have had any issues associated with the product.

Thanks

My supplier is going to start making this next year (2016) for me here. I am beyond excited to use it for my Trauma/MTP protocols. I have been waiting on them to get me the ISBT information to load into Meditech, and then I will update my procedures. Everything I have read saids it isnt indicated for coag issues, but can be used for volume replacement and resucitation.

I've thought about checking into this recently for use with our MTPs.  We do not keep thawed FFP available -- too much wastage, but I think having liquid plasma on hand would help stop the bleeding quicker, thus helping the patient sooner.  I don't know anything about price or shelf life yet, but I'm going to approach our supplier.  Nice to know that you use Meditech, jjspees01.  I may need your expertise in getting information entered! I am the BB lead here and we are using the product for traumas and MTPs. The liquid plasma has up to a 26 day outdate and is ready for issue with no modification. It is FDA licensed as of this June 2015 and stability of coag factors are very similar to FFP. Very nice product, sent 3 units out the door today within 5 min of the request for a GI bleed. So far, no issues. The American Red Cross blood centers are now processing this product as well as Blood Works NorthWest. American Red Cross requires a standing order. The product is approximately half the price of a unit of FFP. We pay $xx/unit. Since we have started carrying it, we have wasted about 8-12 units using only 4 so far. The challenge has been to get our docs on board with any new product or process because we also only carry A in the liquid plasma. Hope this helps.

I highly suggest removing the cost from your post, most blood supplier contracts consider that confidential information.

Lbiggs, Where are you located? I'm in Oregon and we use Bloodworks. We are just waiting for the MTP protocol to be revised to state that we will use liquid plasma and then we will keep 4 units on the shelf. They will also be A, as there is a lot of data out there regarding using A plasma without incident.

Yes, I have also started using it; unfortunately the only indication is emergency use (for initial emergency release or for the first two units for an MTP). There are studies that show that on day 15, about 50% of the clotting factors are diminished so you should not be using this for your routine plasma orders for patients who need correction of clotting factor deficiencies (including Warfarin use).

It's wonderful for MTPs though. The docs love that we bring it right away. Then we start thawing FFP for the rest of the MTP.
