  1. Does anyone use BioTest? I received their price list and they are alot cheaper.
  2. I have always been taught to abide be the strictest requirements, as long as it is from a reliable source. That being said, according to the most recent Technical Manual 16 Ed. Page 617 under Delay in Starting Transfusion, it states that the unit must be infused within 4hrs of the time that it was issued from the transfusion service, or it must be discarded. We are dealing with this problem currently. We have asked the the order be written to transfuse the unit no greater than 3hrs to allow them time to pick-up the unit, perform all of the necessary checks and get it started. Mabel is correct in that the Admin Set cannot be used for >4hrs.
  3. They have been doing it this way for many years (I have been here for 2). I will check and get back to you.
  4. We use the 1:50 titer. It has worked well for years. 1 drop plasma to 49 drops of saline. Test 2 drops against 1 drop of A1 or B cells at IS. It is quick and easy.
  5. If you are dealing with a plt apheresis then you must use a sterile docking device of the remaining amount in the mother unit will expire in 4 hrs. Your blood supplier may be able to dock aliquot bags to the mother unit for you (for a fee). The aliquot will expire 4 hrs from the time that the aliquot is made. It does not matter if it is in a syringe or a bag. If you need additional info you can call me at (205) 558-2347. James at Children's Hospital. Hope this helps.
  6. We are in the middle of planning for our new expansion facility and there are a couple of things that we must work out. We are going to start solid organ transplant in this new facility. I am hopping to gather some information from everyone to help us plan for what would work best for us. We are a Children’s hospital. We are going to have around 350 beds. We have a burn unit, stem cell unit, a large sickle cell outpatient population and we are bringing in CV Surgery. How do you deliver blood products to the OR and CV? Do you have a tube system or satellite blood bank? Do you have emergency power for the tube system? Does anyone use a Dumbwaiter to deliver a cooler of blood to OR? How do you handle a request for more than one unit for a patient? How do you handle specimens from the ER, OR and CV? Do they go directly to the Blood Bank? What is an acceptable TAT for the ER, OR and CV? Thank you in advance for you help. James Ward
  7. We need to open a new work station. The only peice of equipment that we need is a centrifuge. Currently we are using the old Clay Adams Sero-fuge II. I would like to find out what others are using and their over all opinion. Thank-you in advance for your help.
